Young Gun of Wine is an annual wine event that started in 2007, with the emphasis on showcasing the up and coming rising stars of winemaking who are not bound by the shackles of tradition and who look to experiment to create new and interesting wines. It’s not like your regular wine show, to enter the Young Gun of Wines, wine makers were required to attended at least one of the qualifying events held in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Perth throughout October and November 2016.

Young Gun of Wine Sydney

I attended the Young Gun of Wine in Sydney which was held at the Ivy and it was a great night with 50 other winemakers bring 2 of their best wines to show the wine loving public. There was a fair contingent of NSW / ACT wine makers, but I met a few people who made the trip from Tasmania with some ripper cool climate white wines and there was also good contingent from SA. We were spread across the venue and we each had a table and a few bottles of wine in ice buckets and we were able to pour and talk the which was really a good way of interacting with people.

Young Gun of Wine Adelaide

I also popped along to the Young Gun of Wine event in Adelaide, which was held in an old industrial shed in the CBD, I’m pretty sure it’s a U-park by day, but it was decked out and looked pretty cool. The set up for tasting was more structured with all the wine makers sectioned off from the crowd, a little less intimate but equally as fun and great to show people my Montepulciano Rosato and my Nero d’Avola Lagrein and tell them all about SAMU.

The uber cool The Henry Austin restaurant and bar did the catering served up in a stainless steel camping trangias (why not?), and the slow cooked lamb shoulder was so good after a few busy of hours of pouring and sampling.

Following the tasting we have sent of 2 wines to the judging panel to decide the Young Gun of Wine, and for this I have decided to put forward my 2016 Lagrein and 2015 Nero Merlot and hopefully they are enjoyed as much as I enjoyed being part of the Young Gun of Wines for 2016!

Getting ready for the @younggunofwine should be a ripper! #southaustralia #wine #samuwines #YGOW #adelaide #yeww
